Mei Suruga & Baliyan Akki vs. Chris Brookes & Masahiro Takanashi (Gatoh Move, 11/20/2023)

Asia Dream Tag Team Championship: Mei Suruga & Baliyan Akki (c) vs. Chris Brookes & Masahiro Takanashi

Gatoh Move always delivers on flashiness and innovation, and this match was no exception. But there were storytelling elements that were hard to buy into. Namely Mei Suruga holding her own against two adult male wrestlers for almost 30 minutes. Granted, it was a tag match where she had the help of a male partner but still... People complain about Canadian Destroyers or "no-selling", but this sort of thing that is prevalent on the indie scene is fine apparently. I acknowledge and appreciate the athleticism and innovation shown by the wrestlers, but it veered too much into indulgence. It felt more like a cultural festival performance than a wrestling match. Within that context, it was excellent. It's a bit of a shame that Mei Suruga's most notable match of the year in GTMV featured all male competitors. ****
