Suzu Suzuki & Mei Seira vs. Hazuki & Koguma (Stardom, 5/5/2024)

Stardom - GoldenWeek Fight Tour 2024 (5/5/2024)

Goddesses of Stardom Championship: Suzu Suzuki & Mei Seira (c) vs. Hazuki & Koguma

Pure magic for Golden Week in Fukuoka. This was a breathtaking display of tag team action from two of Stardom's most reliable teams. Both teams displayed incredible coordination and teamwork, using an array of double-team moves, with last-minute saves keeping the tension high right down to the finishing stretch. It had the perfect ebb and flow that made everything feel urgent and earned. The crowd response was also amazing throughout, with full support for hometown heroes Hazuki & Koguma, really setting the scene for an emotional conclusion as FWC reclaimed the tag belts for the third time. ****1/2

Jordynne Grace vs. Miyu Yamashita (TNA, 4/21/2024)

TNA - IMPACT (4/21/2024)

TNA Knockouts World Championship: Jordynne Grace (c) vs. Miyu Yamashita

Jordynne Grace was super aggressive in this match. When Miyu Yamashita locked in her grounded cobra clutch, Grace exploded with a quick triangle and some brutal stomps. When Miyu landed a middle kick, Grace immediately goes for a slam. When Miyu gets out of it and counters with a high kick, Grace lands a spinning backfist at the same time. She kept the pressure on throughout and was rarely passive, landing heavy smacks in between transitions. This was Kensuke Sasaki levels of dominating the flow of the match. Miyu was overwhelmed by the relentless assault, barely finding any openings. It was a decisive defeat. ***1/2

Natsumi Sumikawa vs. Chika Goto (AWG, 4/14/2024)

AWG - ACTwrestling Step 39 (4/14/2024)

AWG Championship: Natsumi Sumikawa (c) vs. Chika Goto

Marigold sneak preview? Chika Goto's impressive size, visuals, and natural wrestling sense have propelled her quickly to title contender status. Her fresh presence and momentum clashed with Natsumi's veteran toughness. Natsumi's knees, kicks, and elbows landed with loud impacts, and Gochika displayed her toughness by absorbing them head-on while returning fire with impressive power moves. Solid match. ***1/4

Mio Momono vs. Mayumi Ozaki (OZ Academy, 4/28/2024)

OZ Academy - Battle Big Bonus 2024 (4/28/2024)

OZ Openweight Championship: Mio Momono (c) vs. Mayumi Ozaki

The Marvelous match worked because Mayumi Ozaki was an invading heel against Mio Momono on her home turf. This rematch on Mayumi Ozaki's turf felt totally out of whack. The belt flowed to an outsider and the native brings it back home via all sorts of cheating and outside interference? Mio Momono is the outsider so I am not supposed to support her, but she's also the tiny wrestler fighting against a cheating opponent with an ever-present stable disrupting the match.. The role reversal seemed like an opportunity to do something interesting, maybe Momono fighting dirty and Ozaki fighting clean. But they largely retraced the Marvelous match, with a less engaging story dynamic. Mayumi Ozaki is "playing a heel" so the audience cheers and applauds her as she brutalizes her opponent and relies on outside interference. The whole thing was overly self-indulgent and pretentious.

Miku Aono vs. Asahi (AWG, 10/15/2023)

AWG - ACTwrestling In Korakuen Hall (10/15/2023)

AWG Championship: Miku Aono (c) vs. Asahi

Early headlocks, running neckbreaker, stretch plum, 619, backdrop, lariat; this match had everything you'd expect from a classic pro-wrestling match, even if AWG wouldn't call it that! The challenger Asahi, an outsider aiming to break the status quo, clashed with Miku Aono, the immovable royal road ace. It was a chemical reaction that sparked an emotional and intense confrontation. Asahi was incredibly sharp in this match, with impressive subtle details in her performance. Somehow, her wrestling instincts seemed to be firing on all cylinders. This was definitely her best singles match. Miku Aono was great as the absolute champion, with powerful low kicks, throws and lariats. The action flowed with an incredible sense of dynamism. Great match. ****1/4

Stardom - ALL STAR GRAND QUEENDOM 2024 (4/27/2024)

Tam Nakano & Natsupoi vs. Aja Kong & Kaoru Ito

This transcended imagination. I had no idea Aja Kong still had this gear in her, but then again, she's rarely come across an emotionally complex force like Tam Nakano. Kaoru Ito might have been even more amazing. Tam & Natsupoi used their technical brilliance and speed while the giant sized veterans countered with pure instincts and power. Meltear took everything the behemoths threw at them and kept fighting back bravely. I was most impressed by Natsupoi bearing Kaoru Ito's double foot stomps (!). Every sequence was like a dream. A hyperdimensional clash of generations. ****1/4

IWGP Women's Championship: Mayu Iwatani (c) vs. Sareee

Four years in the making, this dream match was finally realized. I am so glad it delivered a decisive finish. Sareee's reputation for "strength" is undeniable, so defeating her was a huge statement for Mayu Iwatani, the IWGP title, and Stardom as a whole. In the same way that Keiji Muto defeating Nobuhiko Takada of U-Inter was for New Japan. This was a highly competitive 20 minutes with both wrestlers pushing each other to the absolute brink. A blend of orthodox royal road pro-wrestling with some astringent elements like unusually stiff shots, foot chokes, outside brawling, and kicks and headbutts to grounded opponents. Mayu, who openly admitted to fearing Sareee's elbow, showed incredible guts in taking the punishment and refusing to stay down. ****1/4

Wonder of Stardom Championship: Saori Anou (c) vs. Hanan

This was a phenomenal title defense by Saori Anou. Her bumping aesthetics are masterful, and her comebacks are even more impressive. She absorbed Hanan's charge, made the challenger look like a real threat, and then pulled off a dramatic last-minute victory. It was classic NWA championship methodology. Hanan bombarded Anou with backdrops, seemingly on the verge of victory, but Anou snatched the win in spectacular fashion. Credit to Hanan as well, who has been looking impressive lately and brought her absolute best. 21 minutes were paced and built with exquisite control, recharging and drawing in the crowd after the excitement of the previous match. It is no exaggeration to say that Saori Anou is a genius in visuals, charisma, bumping, mic skills, technique and generalship. ****1/2

World of Stardom Championship: Maika (c) vs. Momo Watanabe

I was initially concerned about this closing the show, but Maika and Brapi delivered something truly exciting and fresh. 2/3 fall title matches are a rarity in Japan these days, but they brought back the magic of that format with this one. The pacing and structure was amazing, especially considering the different stips for each fall. The first two falls defied expectations, with each conquering the other under their opponent's preferred ruleset. The third was a heavy war of attrition (last man standing). The wrestling throughout was dynamic, varied and hard-hitting with both showing tireless stamina. It reminded me all over again that Momo Watanabe is an amazing wrestler.  Really, both are amazing and their efforts to live up to the main event billing should be commended. ****1/2

Stardom - Stardom in Korakuen 2024 (4/12/2024)

Tam Nakano, Natsupoi & Saori Anou vs. Yuna Mizumori, Aya Sakura & Sayaka Kurara

The "Tropical Audition"-gumi have clearly benefited from training together. Their coordination was excellent. Even more impressively, they expressed their struggles well through their wrestling. This arc was a great nourishment for Sayaka Kurara and Aya Sakura, who has completely made up for the time she missed due to injury. Yunamon also benefitted, showing her leadership skills and proving herself indispensable to Kouzen. The match was emotional and fast moving, an amazing climax to the story. ****

Hanan & Mayu Iwatani vs. Giulia & Syuri

This started off with playful freestyling, but gradually grew more intense and competitive. A perfect blend of fun and serious wrestling. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, especially the callbacks that longtime fans will appreciate. Giulia and Hanan's backdrop exchange was strong, with Hanan's finishing backdrop landing at the last possible second. It made me think of Giant Baba's words, if a match ends in a draw, the wrestler who had the initiative at the end is the winner in the eyes of the viewer. This match served as a farewell for Giulia while also creating anticipation for the future by showcasing the young Hanan. ****
