TJPW - SUMMER SUN PRINCESS '23 (7/8/2023)

6. Miu Watanabe vs. Nyla Rose

This was one of my most anticipated matches of the card. The match was great while it lasted. As witnessed in her feud with Riho, Nyla Rose is a generous bumper despite her size, and she took big bumps here. Miu typically doesn't find herself in the "passive" role during matches, often taking charge. However, in this particular instance, she showcased her ability in playing the underdog, enduring bumps and making comebacks. She wasn't able to fully execute the giant swing, but her slams looked strong. ****

7. EVE Championship: Miyu Yamashita (c) vs. Sawyer Wreck

Miyu Yamashita's return to singles competition in Japan after a long time. Unlike her usual matches where Miyu dominates, this time her opponent took a significant portion of the bout. Sawyer Wreck's power and height (188cm) should be more than enough for her to win, but she has a strange penchant for brawling outside of the ring and using chairs, perhaps owed to her death match wrestling experience. The flow leading up to the finishing Skull Kick from Miyu was well-done. ***3/4

9. International Princess Championship: Rika Tatsumi (c) vs. Yuki Aino

A solid semi-main event. Rika Tatsumi has established several different finishers which lends drama to the match when her opponent survives one of them. In this particular instance, Aino managed to escape Rika's relentless Dragon Sleeper hold, only to eventually succumb to the Missile Hips. ***1/4

10. Princess of Princess Championship: Mizuki (c) vs. Maki Ito

This felt like the opening stage of a long-form main event was stretched out over the entire match, as if they were locked into a single gear before suddenly shifting into high gear in the final minutes of the match. For such a long match, I hardly remember what happened during the bulk of it. A lot of dead space. It really hinged on those closing moments, which were good, but the overall match fell short of the emotional epic I had anticipated given Mizuki and Maki Ito's story and history. The wrestling throughout was mostly consistent, with parity and skillful counter-work. ***3/4
